Hemodialysis
Hemodialysis is the most common type of dialysis treatment. Hemodialysis sessions are less frequent than peritoneal sessions, though both are ongoing. Typical hemodialysis treatment takes place in a dialysis center, hospital, or other facility. This type of dialysis uses a dialyzer, or an artificial kidney, to remove, filter, and return blood from a patient’s body.
Done on scheduled days in center 3 times weekly
Treatment typically completed during the day
Sessions usually last between 3 and 5 hours
Permanent access is required
Does not require in home dialysis supply storage
